This page displays Spurgeon's F.D.C's First Day Cover (FDC) cachets created during 1973 - 1979 by
Joe Spurgeon, (Joseph Z.) (1935-1995) of Petoskey, MI and Charlevoix, MI. Except as noted by "{A}" (my personal collection), all other displayed covers were found on the Web. This page also displays the only two Petoskey Artist Cachets I know about
(#1759 and #1770) which were produced by Joe Spurgeon.

The following items were saved in one of my 220 1973-1995 correspondence folders. Joe and I corresponded between 1975 and 1980. He was an FDC Dealer, a Cachetmaker, and a collector. He also collected the
1937 #799-802 Territorials. I bought a lot of covers from him and we traded many others to expand our collections. His 1973 Cover Exchange ad for LBJ Cachets Wanted at [#108, 19(1), 1-2/1974, p. 64] issue may have been the reason behind his
choosing #1503 -- 8-27-1973 for his First Cachet. He also specialized in cachets for Sky Lab, Apollo-Soyuz, and all 1948 issues. A 1977 story,
Believe It or Not!, story appeared at
[#126, 22(1), 1-2/1977, p. 70] about a store consignment of his FDCs and some clueless
burglars.
- #SASE -- Cacheted blank covers by Joe Spurgeon --- {A}
One SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) and two SAE (self-addressed envelopes) Joe sometimes sent to his customers for approval payments or other correspondence. I kept all he sent.

- #XMAS -- Christmas Greetings sent to customers by Joe Spurgeon
(received 12-24-1977) --- {A}

- U.S. Scott # -- Joe Spurgeon's letterhead on his 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" note paper
(received 8-06-1980) --- {A}

- #Insert -- Joe Spurgeon's printed heavy weight paper insert to protect covers he mailed to customers. Folded in half, it was 3-7/8" x 9-1/8" to fit inside a #10 envelope. --- {A}

- #Catalogs -- Joe Spurgeon sent out periodic Auction Catalogs and Price Lists. If I ever find any of them I will scan them and add them here.
- #Homes -- A Google map showing the two places that I know about where
Joe Spurgeon lived, in Charlevoix and Petoskey, Michigan. His AFDCS (#10318) reinstatement listing in the Nov/Dec 1981 issue was the first use I had seen of his move to Charlevoix. He was manager of the Charlevoix Rainbow Shoppe from the early 1980s until he passed away on 10-24-1995 at age 60.

- #Ads -- Joe Spurgeon's advertisements in First Days
[#128, 22(3), 5-6/1977, p. 11] / [#134, 23(3), 5-6/1978, p. 65] / [#139, 24(2), 3-4/1979, p. 50]
/ [#142, 24(5), 9-10/1979, p. 49] / [#143, 24(6), 11-12/1979, p. 56] / [#147, 25(4), 7-8/1980, p. 509]
/ [#159, 27(4), 5-15-1982, p. 458], some ads appeared multiple times
